Dr. Mark Sinyor 0:00 So Robin Williams died by suicide in August of 2014. It was widely reported, it was reported in a very specific and interesting way. It was reported as a sad clown battling demons. And that's probably was a problem for a number of different reasons. First of all, everybody may be as a sad clown, and we all have demons. We wouldn't talk about other health health stories in this way, you wouldn't talk about a person dying from a heart attack and the the evil spirit that invaded his coronary arteries. But, but it was presented in this sort of way of like this super identifiable person who just couldn't hack it. And maybe everybody else, you know, who knows, maybe anybody else could be like this. And in fact, there were almost 2000 excess suicides in the United States in the following five months, and several 100 More in Canada and in Australia, in the two other countries where it was studied, which really just shows that when you when you present these kinds of things you can have I mean, just by way of reference, the global financial crisis was associated with a 6% increase in suicides and Robin Williams a 10% increase. So the magnitude is really substantial. Transcribed by https://otter.ai
